I took this at Zimanga Private Game Reserve. While not endangered, White Rhinos are on the "near threatened" list with only about 10,000 mature animals left in the world. Parks and reserves in Africa employ armed anti-poaching teams who patrol the grounds round the clock. As an additional measure to deter poachers, they cut off the horns of the adults. The horns are made of keratin, which is the same material as human fingernails. It does not hurt the rhinos to cut the horns, but it is controversial as it's felt that changes the behavior and social interactions.
This image was not eligible for the nature category as the horn had been removed by humans.
