Voracious Milkweed Tussocks by Bob Ferrante
Our milkweed plants have attracted many insect species this summer. The discovery of the larvae for the Milkweed Tussock Moth was a treat. These colorful caterlpillars are considered "gregarious" in their behavior as they work as a group during feeding. They band together and forage on one leaf at a time, stripping it of all but the veins before they move on to another leaf. I stopped counting at 50 feeding on one leaf. Eating the sap from the milkweed, they produce a toxin as a defense mechanism. Taken with a long lens then cropped. Flash was used as well.
